About this Video

Established in 2012, Fundación Casa Cortés is a private, nonprofit organization with the mission of educating and inspiring with their passion for the arts of the Caribbean. It is the cultural center of the Chocolate Cortés corporate group and exhibits contemporary artworks drawn from the Cortés Family’s private art collection, which are used for educational purposes. The only private art collection in Old San Juan with free admission, the vision of Fundación Casa Cortés is to be internationally recognized as a vital center for the appreciation, exchange and study of the arts of the Caribbean. In response to the devastation caused by hurricane María which affected most public schools, Fundación Casa Cortés established a temporary school–Escuela Educa Cortés–free of charge to more than 100 students from over 20 public schools, until the schools announced their reopenings. During five consecutive weeks, without electricity, the School operated Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 3:00pm and served children and youth ages 3-17, and also provided lunch and afternoon snack. The curriculum included: educational workshops with dialogue and reflection and art integration, healing through art workshops, reading time/open mic, creation, illustration and presentation of short stories inspired in our exhibit, games time, explorations around Old San Juan, and specialized workshops such a writing, Capoeira, Yoga and creative movement.
